    What is a Cooling Pillow?

image of 3 pillows stacked up on top of each other with the middle pillow representing cooling pillow

A cooling pillow is a type of pillow that is designed to help cool your body temperature down as you sleep at night. These pillows are cool to the touch as they are made with materials that come with cooling properties to dissipate heat for a more comfortable sleep experience.

Since it gets rid of heat, it will also help to prevent night sweats, which is a normal occurrence for hot sleepers.

    Types of Cooling Pillows

As I mentioned earlier, cooling pillows are made with naturally cooling materials that absorb heat. In the market, it’s a norm to find various kinds of cooling pillows using different materials.

The common types of cooling pillows are as listed below:

Memory foam pillows: Memory foam pillow is a popular choice for many as they provide personalized support for the head and neck. It can be made with a cooling gel agent or shredded memory foam for more breathability.

Latex: Latex is another type of pillow that sleeps cool due to its structural design and natural breathability.

Down alternative pillows: Down alternative pillows usually combine polyester and microfiber fills as they are cooler alternatives to the regular down pillows.

Gel-infused pillows: Gel-infused pillows are pillows made with a layer of cooling gel or gel-infused foam to keep the pillow surface cool for hot sleepers.

Moisture-wicking pillows: Moisture-wicking pillows are made with moisture-wicking fabrics to help move sweat away from the body so that the sleeper remains feeling cool.

    1. Best Overall: Purple Harmony Pillow

    Best Overall: Purple Harmony Pillow
    Credit: Amazon

    User Ratings: 4.3/5 Stars | Price: $170-$239

The Purple Harmony Pillow is designed to bring cooling comfort to hot sleepers while maintaining a weightless and airy feel when lying on it. The pillow consists of three components, which are a 360Âș wrap of Honeycomb GelFlex Grid, a ventilated latex core, and a moisture-wicking stretch knit cover. Having all of these combined helps to maximize the airflow so that you won’t wake up in the middle of the night feeling warm.

Not to mention, the pillow also comes in low, medium, and tall lofts, catering to different types of sleepers. Low lofts are suited for stomach and back sleepers, medium lofts are suited for side sleepers and combination sleepers, while tall lofts are often suited for taller individuals, side sleepers, and combination sleepers.

    Our Testing

The first test that we conducted with this pillow was the hand test. This involved pressing our hands into the pillow to determine its firmness and support. Right as we sunk our hands into the pillow, we could immediately feel how soft the pillow was, along with a slight cooling sensation. It has a rather bouncy texture, springing back up immediately as we release our hands.

However, doing the hand test alone was not enough for us to determine how supportive the pillow was. So, we then moved on to our next test, which was the support test. This test required us to lie on the pillow, re-enacting the way that we slept at night. We chose the medium loft and proceeded to lie against the pillow and close our eyes. The first thought that came to mind was how comfortable it felt! The head, neck, and shoulders were all comfortably positioned, and it didn’t feel like there was much sinking.

It’s also worth noting that for the support test, it was done in a room without any air-conditioning or fan so that we could see if the pillow had a substantial cooling effect. While there was a cooling effect, we also noticed that the more time we spent lying on it, the warmer it got. Overall, we still think that this is one of the best cooling pillows for its design and accommodation to all sleeping positions.

What we liked about this pillow

We liked how supportive the pillow was. Despite it being soft and squishy to the touch, we were pleasantly surprised when we placed our heads against it and it didn’t sink entirely.

We also liked how the brand itself had come up with a few different height options for their pillows, accommodating all kinds of sleepers. This was a particularly nice touch.

What we didn’t quite like about this pillow

However, we did feel that the pillow fell short in terms of its cooling properties. While it’s meant to keep you cool throughout the night, the coolness lasted temporarily before we started to feel the pillow turning warm. This is not the most ideal for a hot sleeper in the long run.

    ProsCons
Three different loft optionsCooling effect may not last long for some
Soft but firmMay slide with the use of a pillowcase
    Supports the head and neck

    2. Best Cooling Gel Pillow: TEMPUR-PEDIC Cloud Dual Cooling Pillow

    Credit: Amazon

    User Ratings: 4.2/5 Stars | Price: $199

The TEMPUR-PEDIC Cloud Dual Cooling Pillow is designed for sleepers who are looking to experience the signature TEMPUR memory foam pillow but with a cooling effect to relieve heat. This pillow features a cooling gel layer technology on both sides of the pillow to help absorb excess heat and ensure that users will stay cool throughout the night.

It’s an ultra-adaptive pillow in medium feel and can be easily compressed and reshaped, providing much-needed support for your neck and shoulders. Though it doesn’t offer multiple lofts like some competitors, it’s said to be designed to accommodate all sleeping positions.

    Our Testing

Our first impression of the pillow was when we did the classic hand test to assess the softness and responsiveness. We felt that it was much firmer than a normal pillow, needing quite a bit of pressure to feel it sink in. The pillow also felt pleasantly cool to the touch, and not overly icy. The firmness was confirmed by how slow it took for the pillow to rise back up in shape compared to the Purple pillow.

Next, we moved on to the support test by lying on the pillow in three different sleeping positions. As we had expected, it conformed to the head and neck rather nicely and was very comfortable to use. We did feel that it was slightly uncomfortable to use it while lying on the side due to the weight and heaviness.

Cooling-wise, we did feel that the gel layer worked effectively. We could feel the cooling effect across the entire pillow whenever we turned to a different position.

What we liked about this pillow

We like that this pillow provided ample neck support and conformed to the shape of your head, which is especially great for back sleepers. We also felt that the cooling gel layers did have a good cooling effect, which lasted for quite a long time, even after lying on it for a few hours. It’s one of the better gel memory foam pillows by far.

What we didn’t quite like about this pillow

What we didn’t appreciate was how it felt a little heavy when we used it on the side. As it is a firmer pillow than usual, you may also need to spend some time breaking in the pillow so it feels slightly softer.

It is also said to be made for all sleep positions, but we did feel that it wasn’t the best for stomach sleepers. The pillow has a slight elevation, which may cause a misalignment in your spine position.

    ProsCons
Cooling gel layer technologyCan feel slightly heavy
Forms to the head and neckNot ideal for stomach sleepers
    TEMPUR material relieves pressure

    3. Best for Moisture-Wicking: Rest Evercool Cooling Pillow

    Credit: Amazon

    User Ratings: 4.2/5 Stars | Price: $179

The Rest Evercool Cooling Pillow is created for hot sleepers who frequently experience night sweats. It features a multi-layer design to ensure that you constantly stay cool at night. The silicon sponge core ensures continuous airflow and breathability, while the cooling Evercool fabric fitted over it is made to get rid of excess moisture for a sweat and wrinkle-free sleep.

This pillow also comes in three different loft sizes for you to choose from. If you’re a back sleeper, someone with a small or medium frame, or you’re under the height of 5’2″, opting for the low loft pillow is the most ideal. If you’re a side or combination sleeper, someone with a medium or large frame, or you have a height between 5’2″ to 5’9″, you can opt for the medium loft. For side or combination sleepers, those with large or extra-large frames or have a height above 5’9″, the best option would be the high loft one.

However, this is only a guideline for you to reference. If you prefer a lower or taller pillow, you could always pick a different option. It also comes in a contoured design with medium softness.

    Our Testing

Like the other pillows, we did a hand test to evaluate the texture of the pillow. It did feel soft and bouncy, similar to how a down pillow would feel. We wouldn’t say that it was very cool or icy to the touch. It felt normal, maybe just slightly cooler than a regular pillow.

We then did a support test where we lay down on our backs, sides, and stomachs. It felt nice and comfortable when we used it while lying on our backs. The contoured design helped to cradle the head nicely and relieve pressure off the neck. The challenge was when we tried it in a side sleeping position and stomach lying position. We had to manually fold the pillow and maneuver it around to find the sweet spot.

The pillow also didn’t feel hot and maintained a dry surface even with prolonged use. It’s a great product for someone who may sweat as they sleep, compared to other cooling pillows.

What we liked about this pillow

We like that it has excellent moisture-wicking properties. It stayed dry even when we used it in a warm environment with no air conditioning, proving that it’s great for sweaty sleepers. It also has decent support, coming in three different loft options.

What we didn’t quite like about this pillow

We felt that for side and stomach sleepers, the pillow may be too soft or uncomfortable. It requires some adjustments until you’re able to feel comfortable with it. Also, while the pillow did not trap heat, it also didn’t feel extra cooling or anything.

    ProsCons
Offers 3 loft optionsCan be costly for the quality
Soft and lightweightMay not suit side and stomach sleepers too well
    Excellent moisture-wicking properties

    4. Best Adjustable Cooling Pillow: Coop Sleep Goods Cool+ Adjustable Pillow

    Credit: Amazon

    User Ratings: 4.4/5 Stars | Price: $145

The Coop Sleep Goods Cool+ Adjustable Pillow is perfect for sleepers who want full control over the height and firmness of their pillow but with a cool twist. It’s filled with gel-infused memory foam and microfiber, and the inside is fully adjustable, meaning you can add or remove fill to customize your support level. What makes this “Cool+” version unique is its cool-to-the-touch outer cover, which helps wick away heat and moisture while maintaining breathability throughout the night.

This pillow is an excellent choice for all types of sleepers. It comes in three shapes— classic, crescent and cut-out shape.

    Our Testing

We kicked things off with the hand test by pressing down and squeezing the pillow to assess its feel. Right away, we noticed how soft and responsive the fill was — plush but not overly squishy. The cooling cover felt noticeably cool against the skin and had a slight slickness, hinting at its moisture-wicking design.

We then moved to the support test, adjusting the fill for a medium-loft setting to mimic side sleeping. Lying down, we felt the pillow mold to the contours of the neck and shoulders while still holding its shape. Unlike some shredded memory foam pillows, the Cool+ fill stayed evenly distributed and didn’t clump during the night.

In our warm-room cooling test, the outer cover lived up to its claims. While not ice-cold like some gel covers, it maintained a consistently breathable and dry feel, even after 20+ minutes. We also appreciated the removable fill bag included in the box, making it easy to fine-tune the loft after a few nights of sleep.

What we liked about this pillow

We like that the fill was soft yet supportive. If you don’t feel like it supports your head enough, you could always add more fill with the extra bag of foam that comes with each order. Another aspect we liked a lot was how the brand also offered a crescent-shaped pillow and a cut-out shaped pillow if you’re a side sleeper.

What we didn’t quite like about this pillow

We felt that the cooling was more subtle compared to gel-filled pillows, and it does take some time to find the optimal fill level. We had to keep adding and removing the fill until we found one that felt best.

    ProsCons
    Customizable fillCooling more subtle
Comes in three shapes for different sleep positionsTakes time to adjust fill
    Cool-to-touch outer cover

    5. Best Cooling Pillow for Neck Pain: Casper Sleep Foam Pillow with Snow Technology

    Credit: Amazon

    User Ratings: 4.3/5 Stars | Price: $139-$169

The Casper Foam Pillow with Snow Technology is built for sleepers who suffer from neck pain but still want a consistently cool sleep experience. It uses Casper’s unique three-layer foam construction with zoned support — softer around the edges and firmer in the center — which helps cradle the neck while aligning the spine. The addition of Snow Technology, which includes HeatDeleteℱ Bands, a cool-touch cover, and phase-change materials, allows this pillow to stay cool for up to 12+ hours.

It’s best suited for back and side sleepers, particularly those who prefer a medium-firm feel. The structured foam offers ergonomic support without being too stiff, making it a solid option for reducing pressure on the neck and shoulders.

    Our Testing

We began with the hand test to gauge the firmness. Pressing down, we noticed that the foam had a responsive feel — not too dense, but definitely firmer than traditional memory foam. The Snow Technology was immediately apparent. The cover felt cool to the touch, and the pillow maintained that coolness even after several minutes of handling.

Next, during the support test, we tested it in both back and side sleeping positions. For back sleeping, the center zone supported the natural curve of the neck perfectly. When we switched to the side, the pillow still held its shape and lifted the head enough to keep the spine aligned. It was firm enough to prevent sinking, but soft enough to remain comfortable.

For the cooling test, we lay on the pillow in a warm room without airflow. True to its claims, the pillow stayed cool much longer than others we tested — even after 20 minutes of continuous use, it still felt cool to the touch.

What we liked about this pillow

We liked that this pillow supported the natural curve of our necks well. It was also firm and cooling, which is a good thing.

What we didn’t quite like about this pillow

We felt that this pillow felt too high and thick. If there were a way for us to adjust the fill, we definitely would have done it because that made the experience a little disappointing.

    ProsCons
    Long-lasting cooling effectNon-adjustable fill
Memory foam that supports the neckCan feel too firm for some users
    Aligns the spine

    User Ratings: 3.9/5 Stars | Price: $79-$89

The Slumber Cloud UltraCool Pillow is an affordable yet highly effective cooling pillow that uses NASA-engineered OutlastÂź technology. This phase change material absorbs excess body heat and releases it as you cool down, helping to maintain a stable temperature throughout the night. The pillow has a soft, plush feel and comes with a breathable cotton cover that adds to the overall cooling effect.

It’s designed for all sleep positions, with medium firmness that provides balanced support for your head and neck. What makes this pillow stand out is that it delivers high-end cooling performance without the premium price tag, making it a great choice if you’re looking for comfort and temperature regulation on a budget.

    Our Testing

In our first test, we checked how cool the surface of the pillow remained after lying on it for 15 minutes in a room without air conditioning. The cover remained noticeably cooler than other synthetic-filled pillows we tested. It didn’t get too cold — just enough to feel refreshing without causing discomfort.

For the support test, we tried the pillow in all three sleeping positions. While it didn’t offer the same tailored support as some memory foam options, it still provided a decent level of lift for the head and neck, especially for back and stomach sleepers.

What we liked about this pillow

We were impressed with how effectively this pillow balanced cooling and comfort. It maintained a noticeably cooler surface throughout the night without feeling too cold or stiff. We also liked how this pillow offers cooling technology similar to more expensive models, without the high price tag.

What we didn’t quite like about this pillow

While the pillow’s plushness adds to its comfort, it may not offer enough support for strict side sleepers or those who prefer a firmer feel. It also doesn’t come in multiple loft options, which might limit its appeal to people with specific neck support needs.

    ProsCons
Advanced cooling technologyToo soft for side sleepers
Great value for the priceOnly comes in one loft options
Soft and breathable pillowLacks firm support
